It is a 112 page soft cover book, perfect bound and with a cloth spine, printed 2 colour throughout. The main body of the book is a series of transcripts and these contain extended footnotes by the authors. Initial inspiration came from the organisation of objects within the traditional barbershop, as well as workshops, sheds and garages. We developed a collaged aesthetic when designing the space and furniture, combining materials and textures in a very straightforward and functional fashion. <br /> <br />We employed English oak as it is a warm, natural material that can be traditionally crafted; coloured steel items were chosen to contrast with this. This typeface was employed across all printed material and exhibition signage.<br /> <br />We also designed the layout of the exhibition itself, and a series of bespoke plinths to display the work which we had fabricated in powder-coated steel. We revised its typographic identity – whilst still employing the crest that it has used since its foundation – and designed a range of print material. These use traditional book sizes (such as Imperial Quarto and Crown Octavo) and an offwhite paper stock to give the material more relevance to the subject and its heritage. We also designed and developed a database-driven website with a bespoke Content Management System to allow staff at the RSL to add and edit content. Materials and processes were considered, in order to be relevant to the work of the firm. Wallets containing a series of project cards are constructed using greyboard and die-cut with the identity allowing a glimpse of what is inside.
